A DOCUMENTARY on the famous Redbarn ballroom in Youghal will screen at the Triskel later this month.
Generations of Corkonians remember their trips to the famous dancehall by the sea which is recalled in 'Wish You Were Here: The Redbarn Story' by Michael Twomey and Kieran McCarthy of Complete Control. Films.
The film has been almost three years in the making and captures a unique moment in Irish history.
It screens at the Triskel at 8pm on Thursday, August 31.
In 1958, The Lucey Brothers (Jerry, Murt and Michael) identified Redbarn beach in Youghal as the ideal location to build a holiday home and ballroom.
Driven by their passion and love of music acts such as Jim Reeves, Chubby Checker, Billy Furey, Millie Small, Marianne Faithful, The Shadows, Joe Frazier, The Horslips, Mud, Rory Gallagher and many more thrilled audiences at Youghal.
The dancehall was also home to the extraordinary showband explosion with regular visits from The Clipper Carlton, The Miami, The Victors, The Freshmen, The Royal and The Big 8, The Cadets, Red Hurley, Colm Wilkinson, Dickie Rock, Larry Cunningham, Joe Dolan and the Drifters, The Dixies, Gina and the Champions and many more.
This was a unique moment in Irish social history when 3,000 people packed into the hall just the dance.
The Ballroom was the epicentre for a social phenomenon that witnessed Ireland move into a brighter future, an inclusive future where the young were caught up in the promise of change.
The documentary will present this highly romantic and simpler time through the voices and faces of those who spent their holidays on the beach, the couples who met and married there, the bands that grew up as performers on its stage and the surviving members of the Lucey family.
Tickets for the screening are €10 and available in person from Triskel Box Office, phone at 021 4272022.
