Gardaí have issued a witness appeal following the assault saying a number of people were in the area at the time and have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage on their camera phone to contact them.
The incident took place at 10pm outside a bar on the Old Youghal Road.
It is understood an altercation occurred between two men and that the injured party was injured, falling to the ground and hitting his head on the footpath and fracturing his skull.
He was rushed to hospital and has since undergone emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition.
Garda Inspector Mary King said she is appealing to anyone who was in the area to come forward.
“The assault took place outside a pub and there
a few people around. We are asking those people to come forward with information."
“Anyone who was in the area, taxis passing by, anyone with a camera phone or footage of the incident to contact the Gardaí.”
Local city councillor Ted Tynan described the incident as an awful tragedy. "From what I heard there was an altercation and one punch was thrown that landed the young fella on the ground. He hit his head."
"It is just one of those things, but it is very sad. I hope he recovers."
