INVESTIGATIONS are underway into an arson attack carried out at a house in Midleton while a mother and her young daughter slept.
Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage by fire that occurred at approximately 4am Wednesday morning in Broomfield, Midleton.
An object was reportedly put in through an open window at the house, causing blinds and a curtain to catch flames.
The mother and daughter were alerted to the fire after an alarm went off and escaped from the building.
Three units of the fire brigade attended to the blaze.
A technical examination was later carried out at the scene.
Both mother and daughter were unharmed during the incident, apart from being treated for shock at the scene.
Local Councillor Danielle Twomey said Broomfield is a peaceful, residential area.
“We don’t have this kind of thing happen in our town,” Cllr Twomey told the Evening Echo.
“It’s frightening and we need now to focus on keeping our community-based spirit. Broomfield is a quiet, residential area and you would never hear of anything like this so for something like this to happen, it’s frightening.”
Cllr Twomey is appealing to anyone in the area who may have information about the incident to come forward and assist the gardaí with their investigations.
“Our community cannot tolerate this kind of behaviour, especially against one of our own. As a community, we need to rally together and stand up against this now because if we don’t, what will happen the next time.”
Gardai are also urging anyone with information relating to the attack to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 462 1550.
