CORK is gearing up for Bonfire Night activities across the city, with people being asked to attend the City Council's planned outdoor events.
A range of activities are planned in five city parks, including bouncy castles, face painting, music and games. It is hoped that the organised activities will reduce the number of unauthorised and potentially dangerous fires.
The fire service has seen an increase in activity in recent nights in the build-up to today. Emergency services were called to a number locations across the city, with reports ranging from grass smouldering to bonfires.
Declan O’Shea of the Cork City Fire Brigade said they expected to be busy and would have a full complement of staff on duty but said the efforts of the City Council in recent years had proved very successful.
“Normally it would be very busy but in recent years the Council has gone to great lengths to organise events and this has led to a massive reduction in unauthorised fires.” Lord Mayor, Cllr Tony Fitzgerald said: “The Bonfire Night Project’s aim is to provide alternative, safe, family-friendly activities on the night.” Dowtcha Puppets have been working hard with local youth groups to create eye-catching bonfire sculptures as part of the celebrations.
In Knocknaheeny, the pupils of Sundays Well Boys National School have kept it topical by creating a giant fidget-spinner to be burnt on the night.
Teenagers from Youthreach in Mahon have built a giant car while in Togher young people from Foróige have helped create a Viking ship that should be a fantastic sight when it goes up in flames.
Dowtcha Artistic Director Cliff Dolliver said safety is a priority: “Two trained fire technicians will be on hand at each location. They are trained to ensure the bonfire has been prepared so it will burn correctly and wil City Council events are taking place as follows:
Kilmore Park, Knocknaheeny 5.00 pm - 8.00 pm
