WORK has begun on three new schools in Carrigaline that will accommodate more than 1,000 pupils once complete.

The Cork Education & Training Board (Cork ETB) launched the development of the €20m, three-school campus at Ardnacloghy yesterday.

The campus will include a Gaelcholáiste secondary school, a Gaelscoil primary school and SONAS special Junior Primary School.

Enabling works have begun at the site near Carrig Na Curra estate on the road into Carrigaline.

The tender competition for the appointment of contractors to carry out the main building contract is currently being undertaken and plans are to commence the main phase of works in April 2018 with an expected completion date of December 2019.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive of Cork ETB, Ted Owens said: “We are thrilled that construction of the new state-of-the-art school facilities at the Ballinrea Road campus is underway. This is another extremely positive development in servicing the educational needs of Carrigaline and its hinterland.

“The countdown is on, and we hope to have a fully functioning campus by December 2019.

This has been a campaign which has now proven to be worth the considerable effort. We have already established the Gaelcholáiste in temporary accommodation, at Waterpark House, Carrigaline.

Donnchadh Ó Cronín, Príomhoide of Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin said: "On behalf of our staff, students, parents and Board members, we warmly welcome the commencement of Enabling Works on the site and look forward to the commencement of construction of the three schools, Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin, Gaelscoil Charraig Uí Leighin and SONAS Junior School, in Spring 2018. It gives us great delight to announce this very important step in the construction of the Carrigaline Education Campus. We would like to thank all those involved in the project for their hard work to date. Ní neart go cur le chéile Cuireann an fhoireann, ár ndaltaí, ár dtuismitheoirí agus an Bord Bainistíochta fáilte Uí Cheallaigh roimh tús na Réamh-Oibreacha ar an suíomh i gCarraig Uí Leighin. Táimíd ag súil go mór leis an Earrach, nuair a thabharfar faoi na hoibreacha tógála ar na trí scoil.

Is údar mór misnigh an chéim thábhachtach seo a fheiscint i dtógáil Champas Oideachais Charraig Uí Leighin. Gabhaimid ár mbuíochas ó chroí le gach éinne as an obair atá déanta acu ar an dtionscadal go dtí seo. Ní neart go cur le chéile.”
