THE Mayor of San Francisco Ed Lee, who acted as Grand Marshall, for Cork's St Patrick's Day parade has died suddenly.
CNN reports that Mayor Edwin M. Lee died early Tuesday morning at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
Lee, 65, had been mayor since 2011.
Cork is twinned with San Francisco and Mayor Lee has visited Leeside on two occasions.
In September he was here with his wife and children for the UNESCO City of Learning Conference.
In 2013, he was named Grand Marshall of Cork's St Patrick's Day parade.
Details have not been made available regarding the circumstances of Lee's death.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family," the office of Mayor of San Francisco said.
In the wake of Storm Ophelia, Mayor Lee wrote to Cork's Lord Mayor, Cllr Tony Fitzgerald saying he joined all of San Franciscans in sending their thoughts to all those whose lives have been upended by the weather event.
“In particular, our much-loved sister city of Cork” “This has been a devastating year of hurricanes in so many places throughout the Atlantic region. Please extend my deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims of this tragedy,” Mayor Lee said.
