THE holiday season has started early in Courtmacsherry this year as warm temperatures attract holidaymakers from across Cork.

Niamh Hurley who runs the local Pier House Bar with Billy Drake said an influx of tourists arrived at the start of May and continue to flock to the beauty spot. Temperatures in Cork this weekend are set to hit 20 degrees Celsius.

“Our business is very weather dependent so the last couple of days have been a real boost for business,” Niamh said.

“There has been a huge push on the Wild Atlantic Way which has also been a factor. You can’t beat sunny weather in Courtmacsherry. The Summer season is starting earlier than we usually expect as a result of the warm weather. Cork people who have caravans tend to just pack their bags and come down as soon as they see the sun come out.

“Most of the people who own caravans here are from Cork or Dublin. Anyone coming from outside of these places normally waits until the exam season is over before making their way down here.”

It’s not just the bars that are benefiting from the glorious weather.

“The local shop closed down in 2016 and a community store was set up in its place. It now serves the tourists very well. The ice-creams, in particular, are selling very well.”

Tourism in Cork is expected to experience a massive boost this summer following news from the Port of Cork that a 30 per cent increase in the numbers of cruise liner visits to Cork Harbour is set to generate more than 180,000 passengers coming ashore, resulting in a €15 million boost for the local economy.
