THE sunshine has been slow in coming so far in 2018 and Cork was one of the worst affected counties in Ireland last month, registering the highest number of wet days and its dullest April since 1987.
Met Éireann’s monthly report showed unsettled weather for much of April with Cork airport recording the highest number of rainy days in Ireland, with precipitation on 24 of the 30 days in the month. By contrast, Malin Head in Donegal saw only 11 wet days.
Cork airport was also top of the list when it came to the more extreme ‘very wet days’. Cork, along with Valentia Observatory in Kerry, had seven such days, while other parts of the country had none.
Moore Park near Fermoy recorded a monthly rainfall total of 174.8 mm, 266% of the monthly average for April. Cork airport and Roches Point also recorded more than twice their monthly average rainfall for the month.
Cork also drew the short straw when it came to sunshine. Apart from Casement Aerodrome, all available monthly sunshine totals nationwide were below average but Cork airport was worst affected, with total sunshine hours of just 104.9 in the month - 65% of the average. This works out at an average of less than four hours per day, making it Cork’s dullest April since 1987. The airport also recorded the highest number of dull days, with 12 in comparison to just two in Donegal.
Despite the rain, temperatures were above their long-term average. The coldest air temperature was recorded in Mullingar, Co Westmeath with a temperature of -5.3 °C, its lowest April daily minimum temperature since 2013. All stations nationwide reported some ground frost during the month.
The start of May brought some brief glimpses of the sun but it is not safe to put away the brollies just yet, with further rain expected for the weekend.
Friday starts wet in Munster and scattered showers will follow for the afternoon. Saturday will see something of a recovery in temperatures but there will be widespread showers and a similar day is predicted on Sunday, with further showers most frequent in the afternoon.
