TWO students from the Cork Life Centre were treated to a ten-day sailing expedition on a tall ship called the Pelican of London this week and last week.

Each year, a number of students from the Life Centre are given the opportunity to head out to sea with Sail Training Ireland. This year Ryan McAuliffe and Raffaello Facini were lucky enough to hop aboard the tall ship and set sail from Dublin. The boys sailed from Dublin to Belfast, Liverpool, Isle of Man, Cork, and back to Dublin.

Director of the Cork Life Centre, Don O’Leary, explained that the trips are paid for by bursary.

“Companies fund the people taking part and we are a nominating body. The boys pay something towards the trip but it is minimal.”

Ryan spoke to the Evening Echo, while on the ship around the coast of Ballycotton on Thursday.

“It’s great fun, I would definitely go sailing again after this,” Ryan said.

Ryan said he was seasick at the start of the trip but thankfully it passed and he is now comfortable on the ship.

“There are 30 of us on the boat, from all over Ireland — Dublin, Donegal, Cork and seven crew members.”

Ryan said the 30 young sailing students are involved in all aspects of managing the ship while onboard.

“We are cooking and cleaning as well as dropping the sails and staying up on watch.”

The fifth class student at Cork Life Centre said he never thought he would enjoy sailing until he got the opportunity to try it out.

“It is something I would never have expected to enjoy, but I do!”
