GARDAÍ are appealing for witnesses to the two-car collision on Sleaveen Road, Macroom, in which a woman in her 90s died.
The victim of the crash yesterday was a local woman. She is believed to have been leaving the town after visiting a local business run by her daughter.
At approximately 5.20pm yesterday her car and another vehicle collided. She sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The second car was driven by a man and he escaped without injuries.
The woman’s body was removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Cork where a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out today. The Coroner was also notified.
Emergency services, including the Macroom Fire Brigade, were called to the scene.
The scene of the collision was closed for most of yesterday evening to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions remained in place until late last night.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact Macroom Garda Station on (026) 20590, the Garda Confidential Line or any garda station.
This was the fourth fatality caused by a traffic accident in Cork this year, following two deaths near Midleton in east Cork and another death in Clonakilty in west Cork.
