AN orienteering event for the vision impaired took place in Fota recently.

Ten pairs of orienteer and guide completed a two-kilometre course on the island following instructions which detail the physical layout that could be picked up with a cane such as following a drain, detecting gravel or tarmacadam.

Organiser Hilary Donnan said it was the first such event in Ireland.

The course was designed and mapped by Sean Cotter who is very well known orienteer from Bishopstown.
