Cork Samaritans warn of bogus door-to-door collector

A WOMAN claiming to be from the Cork branch of Samaritans has been trying to con people out of €20 per week in a scam targeting householders.

The Cork branch issued a warning yesterday after receiving a report that a woman claiming to be from the organisation was going door to door in the Montenotte area, asking people to set up a weekly donation of €20.

A spokesman for the Samaritans said a report was being made to gardaí about the incident.

A statement added: “We want to stress that we DO NOT fundraise in this way, NOR have engaged/approved any person OR group to do so.

The only way you can donate to us is via official fundraising events, which we publicise here and also by using online payments on http://https://www.facebook.com/pg/corksamaritans/fundraisers/; https://www.idonate.ie/926_cork-samaritans.html or by SMS.”
