High levels of E. coli found in water samples take at Garryvoe beach on Tuesday has resulted in a swimming ban at the popular destination.

Cork County Council said bathing water quality results for samples taken at Garryvoe showed high levels of E.coli.

The likely cause of the high levels is wastewater infrastructure in the area.

"Due to the elevated E.coli a temporary Bathing Water Prohibition Notice is being placed on the beach as advised by the HSE," the Council said.

The bathing water was resampled yesterday and full results will be available tomorrow.

"The prohibition notice will remain on display at the beach until updated water quality results are available, the water quality is deemed satisfactory, and following advice from the HSE."
