THE body of murder victim Joe O’Callaghan has been released back to his family and his funeral is set for this weekend.
The 66-year-old Douglas man was murdered at his home in Galway’s Lane, near Douglas GAA Club grounds, in the early hours of last Monday morning.
His remains were released on Wednesday afternoon and burial is expected to take place tomorrow.
Gardaí are continuing their investigations into the murder.
A neighbour reported hearing someone trying to gain entry to the house at around 1.30am.
Mr O’Callaghan was found in a pool of blood by his wife when she returned from a night shift on Monday morning. He was dead.
She raised the alarm and his body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem was carried out.
It is believed nothing was taken from the house, suggesting that burglary was not the motive.
A 22-year-old man was questioned in connection with the murder and was released without charge on Tuesday night.
A file is now being prepared for the DPP.
Gardaí investigating the murder can be contacted at Togher garda station on (021) 4947120.
