PERMISSION has been granted for a 16-bed hostel in Cork’s city centre to be located above the Brick Lane Bar on South Main Street.

The application had been lodged by ‘One to Thee Nightlife Investments’. It proposes to change the use of the first, second and third floors of the current building from nightclub use to a 16-bed hostel.

The bar, formerly The Classic, is located between Castle Street and Washington Street.

City Hall planners had previously sought clarification on a number of issues with the applicant which was complied with.

They have now granted planning for the changes with 16 conditions.

The application is the latest in a series of proposed hostel and budget accommodation developments for the city.

There are plans for a hostel on Morrison's Island while development continues on Parnell Place on a new Maldron Hotel.

Cork City Council also sold two buildings on Parnell Place, previously occupied by Mahers Sports and Flor Griffin, to a Dublin company who have interests in a number of hotels and have plans to develop a boutique hotel and budget hostel.

A final planning decision is awaited by Bam for a new hotel on the former tax office on O'Sullivan's Quay which was recently demolished.
