OVENS singer-songwriter Dan Elliot has earned himself a spot at this summer's Indiependence Music & Arts Festival after coming out on top in the 2018 Le Crunch Apple of My Eye Song Contest.

The young songwriter also walked away with a cheque for €1,500 having fended off strong competition at the live final in Whelan's in Dublin this week.

Cork duo Sparkle were among those in the final, too, joining the Rush (Co Kildare), Perfect Friction (Co Wicklow) and Liam Geddes (Co Dublin).

Dan made the final with his cover of 'Nothing Compares To You', originally by Prince but made famous by Sinéad O'Connor.

Judges Jess Kavanagh of Barq, Cork songwriter Jack O'Rourke and Paddy McKenna of Joe.ie described the final decision as 'extremely tough' as all five finalists impressed on the night.

The five finalists were the result of weeks of deliberation following nearly 600 entries into the nationwide talent search.

Previous entrants in the competition, which tasks singers with presenting their favourite cover version, have included Brave Giant and Stephaine Rainey and have gone on to play at some of Ireland’s biggest festivals and events, while last year's winner Katie Cassidy and Brave Giant played live on the night.

Sandrine Gaborieau, Marketing Director of Le Crunch from France said, "We look forward to seeing how Dan gets on in what we hope will be a hugely successful career.”
