THE stage is now set for the final of the Over 60’s Talent Competition to be held at Cork City Hall next Sunday.
This is the 42nd year of the event and has been described as the biggest social event in Ireland for senior citizens.
Local heats began last January and continued until May 18th. 15 contestants will participate in the final on Sunday, June 17 from 8pm. Final rehearsals were held weekly over the past six weeks at Redmond’s GAA club.
Speaking to the Evening Echo this week Paddy O’Brien, competition organiser said: “This has been a great year for the Over 60’s Talent Competition. More areas took part in the local heats. We had bigger crowds attending each venue and had more people participating at the heats”.
In May last, the competition was featured on RTÉ’s popular programme Nationwide. Mary Kennedy, presenter and the RTÉ crew all attended the Blackrock heat of the competition.
Chairperson of the organising committee Terry Hassett said: “It was a great honour for our club to be part of the Nationwide programme. We had twelve contestants on the night, we were all thrilled in Blackrock”.
Representing the club at the final will be farmer Liam Lynell from Ardmore. Liam will recite a monologue.
The Marina Melodics Choir are guests on the night of the final. The group were formed less than one year ago, and were also featured on Nationwide.
Conductor Deirdre Moriarty said: “Since the Nationwide programme, we have been invited to perform at many events. We are delighted to be part of the Over 60’s final. We are one of the choirs who will sing at the Pope Francis mass in Phoenix Park in August."
Tickets for the Over 60’s Final on June 17 are on sale at Pro Musica and in Blackpool Shopping Centre.
