GARDAÍ in Mayfield are conducting crime scene investigations on the northside of the city after a number of shots were fired in the area last night.

The incident took place in the Chapel Gate housing estate in Ballyvolane.

It is understood that a man in his 40s was out walking a dog in the housing estate when he heard shots coming from behind him.

Nobody was injured in the incident, which took place at about 10.30pm, and it’s understood the attacker fled on foot.

Garda sources said that it is unclear whether or not a firearm was discharged in the direction of this individual.

The scene remained sealed off this morning as gardaí were conducting searches and forensic examinations. They are hoping to find the weapon involved in the incident and are also keen to speak to any witnesses who may be able to help with their investigations.

Gardaí said it is unclear what type of weapon was involved and that they are unsure of what the motive might be.

Supt Mick Comyns has appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly motorists with dashcams. They are also looking for CCTV footage in the area. “Anything that could help us would be great,” said Supt Comyns.
