The attendant lightkeeper at the Galley Head Lighthouse is the guest speaker at the next Dúchas Clonakilty Heritage lecture taking place on Thursday, October 25 at 8.30pm in the Parish Centre.

Gerald Butler, who has featured prominently on the recent RTÉ series on Ireland’s great lighthouses, will tell the fascinating story of his life as a lightkeeper on many of the lighthouses along our coast, in the illustrated lecture entitled, “Lighthouses on the South West Coast of Ireland".

Prior to being stationed at the Galley Head Lighthouse, Gerard worked as a lightkeeper for 21 years, serving most of his time on the southwest coast, including on the Fastnet Rock, the Old Head of Kinsale, Bull Rock and Mizen Head lighthouses.

He is a third-generation lightkeeper on both sides of his family, and is passionate about the lighthouses, their history and telling the story of life on them with others.

He co-authored the book "The Lightkeeper: A Memoir” with Patricia Ahern. The lecture will include the history of the lighthouses and his own experiences while working on them. Signed copies of his book will be available for sale on the night.

The “Lighthouses on the South West Coast of Ireland" illustrated lecture by Gerard Butler, takes place at the Clonakilty Parish Centre on Thursday 25th October, starting at 8.30pm.

People are advised to arrive early.
