Midleton man killed in an accident in Spain

Mr Long was killed in Orihuela Costa, Alicante, close to Mil Palmeras.

A MIDLETON father of three died in Spain at the weekend while attending a 40th birthday party with friends from Cork.

Martin Long, originally from the Mahon/Blackrock area, was crossing the road in Orihuela Costa, Alicante, close to Mil Palmeras, on Thursday morning around 3.15am, when he was fatally injured in a traffic accident.

It is understood there were two men with him at the time of the incident.

Martin was married to Mem Long, originally from Thailand, and was the proud father of three children, one aged 14 and two others aged three and one.

Martin’s younger brother Alan and his father Aidan are stalwart GAA fans and contribute their time to the local hurling and football club in Blackrock, ‘The Rockies’ and ‘St Micheal’s’.

Martin’s mother Ann, his wife Mem, and the rest of his family are said to be devastated and in complete shock following the tragedy.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Monday that consular assistance was being provided to the family of an Irish citizen in Spain.

It is hoped the body will be brought home to Ireland tomorrow.
