THE spectacular outdoor concert, A Summer’s Evening on the Quad, will take place at University College Cork tonight.
The Definitive Rat Pack, joined by soul diva Karen Underwood, backed once again by 20-piece Band of An Garda Síochána, will bring swinging big-band favourites and soul classics to an audience of more than 2,000 people in aid of some of Cork’s most deserving causes.
The open-air concert has become one of the standout shows on Cork’s social calendar; it features Cork soul singer Karen Underwood, the Chorus of Cork Operatic Society and the Band of An Garda Síochána.
Underwood is renowned for her roof-raising jazz, soul and blues and the Chicago native’s booming voice has captivated audiences all over Ireland in recent years. She is best known for her powerful and moving interpretations of the songs of Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse.
Her song list usually includes ‘What A Difference A Day Makes’, ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’, ‘My Funny Valentine’, ‘Let’s Stay Together’, ‘Somebody To Love’, ‘Natural Woman’, ‘Unforgettable’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’, ‘Ain’t Got No’, ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, and many more.
The Summer’s Evening on the Quad was initially organised by a group of volunteers from UCC and Cork-based gardaí and over the years has gone from strength to strength.
This year’s initiative is set to drum up a total of more than €60,000 for charities across Cork; some of the charities set to benefit from this year’s concert include Enable Ireland, Pieta House and Cork Deaf Enterprises.
