TRAFFIC congestion and parking issues on Wellington Road and Leycester Lane are an “accident waiting to happen”, according to a city councillor.
Joe Kavanagh (FG) has called for “worsening” traffic congestion on Wellington Road, particularly during peak school hours, to be addressed by modifying parking bays so vehicles park at a 45-degree angle between York Hill and Sidney Hill.
The area has long been the subject of traffic problems due to a high volume of schools nearby.
“The roads directorate needs to use the expertise of engineers to look at these two areas. They are highly dangerous in terms of parking. The car parking alignment needs to be addressed given the serious increase of cars on roads,” said Mr Kavanagh.
“There’s barely enough room in both areas for one line of traffic. Wellington Road, in particular, is highly dangerous. There are a number of schools in the area and this is leading to all kinds of public safety issues.
“Thes measures should go some way to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion on this particular stretch of road and enhance the safety of pedestrians, motorists and cyclists,” he added.
Mr Kavanagh has also asked the Council to stop cars from parking on both sides of Leycester Lane which he says is causing “serious danger” to residents leaving Merrion Court Estate due to their view being obscured.
“Cars are being left parked on the hill all day long from early morning on both sides of the road and this is presenting a serious danger to residents. This is an accident waiting to happen,” he added.
