Shots fired at pensioner's house in Fairhill

AN elderly man had a narrow escape when shots were fired at his house early this morning.

The man was in bed when he heard two shots being fired at the house in Bride Valley Park, Fairhill after 3.30am this morning.

The front door and the front room window were targeted in the incident.

A short time later, a Volkswagen Passat was found burnt out near Blackstone Bridge in Killeens and gardaí are trying to establish if that is connected to the shooting.

The man, who is in his 70s, was not injured but was shaken by the incident.

Gardai believe the man was not the intended target and an investigation is underway into the motive for the shooting.

The scene was being examined this morning for forensics and door-to-door enquiries were also taking place.

CCTV from the area will also be used by gardaí trying to nab the shooter.

The investigation is based in Gurranabraher garda station.

A garda spokesman said: “No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on 021-4946200.”
