CAMPAIGNERS in Fermoy have reacted angrily after part of the town’s weir collapsed into the River Blackwater.

Save Fermoy Weir is a collection of 20 clubs working together to save the town’s crumbling weir and salmon pass.

The group has been campaigning relentlessly in recent years for the Government to intervene and carry out works to protect the iconic weir in the centre of the town.

However, a section of the weir collapsed in recent days, sparking an angry response from the campaign group, who said substantial damage had been done during minor flooding.

“The inevitable has happened. This is just not the capping but it appears at the moment that some of the weir structure has gone,” the group said on social media.

“No one can say that we didn’t predict this happening and warn all concerned but now over the rest of the winter with more flooding, the damage will increase even more.

“So much for the Councils budget to repair. This will probably end up being a total rebuild.”
