Cyclist killed in west Cork accident

GARDAÍ have issued a witness appeal following a fatal road traffic collision on the N71 this afternoon, which claimed the life of a cyclist.

The incident occurred in the townland of Aghills, just east of Skibbereen, at around 1pm. A woman in her late 40s was fatally injured following a collision with a car.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem, which is to be carried out today.

Details of the victim’s identity have not been released until her family and relatives are informed.

The driver of the car, a woman in her late 50s, was uninjured.

Garda forensic collision investigators attended the scene and the road was closed for some time to facilitate their examination.
