A man has been taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries following a crash between two articulated trucks on the N72 this morning.
The collision occurred at Ballymaquirke Cross near Kanturk at 11.30am, and the road has since been closed for a technical examination.
Local Mallow councillor Mellisa Mullane said that the Ballymaquirke Cross had been highlighted a number of times as a treacherous junction.
“It has been called a black spot on a number of occasions," she said. "There is a plan for the Cork County Council to change it in conjunction with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
Ms Mullane said it was pure luck that someone was not killed on the road today given the danger of the junction and the heavy vehicles involved in the collision.
“We are all aware of how dangerous the area is and know that something needs to be done," she said. "This was a very serious accident, but it could have been a lot worse.”
Ms Mullane said that she understood there were some issues with compulsory purchase orders (CPO) for land in the area that was holding up the project which was hoping to put a roundabout at the junction.
