THE mother who died in her room at Cork University Maternity Hospital on Monday morning has been named as Margaret Downey from Kilmallock, Co Limerick.
The 36-year-old woman was an employee of Novartis in Ringaskiddy.
Her baby boy, who was underneath her on the floor when found by hospital staff, passed away at the hospital shortly after 7pm yesterday evening. He was four days old.
She was married and had two other young children.
Her husband is from between Mitchelstown and Kildorrery.
She was originally from Castletown, near O'Rourke's Cross, on the Limerick side of Charleville. She was an only child and is survived by both parents, who are well known in GAA circles in the Castletown-Ballyagran area of southwest Limerick.
Local Fine Gael county councillor Jerome Scanlan said the area was shocked by the double tragedy. He added: "I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family."
A spokesperson for the South West Hospital Group said a full medical investigation is underway into both deaths.
