The town of Youghal is in shock this evening following the death of an elderly woman in a house fire.
The woman was in her 80s and was living in an apartment above a retail premises on North Main Street in the town.
The alarm was raised at approximately 4.30pm, just a few hours after the town's annual St Patrick's Day took place.
Four units of the County Fire Service attended the incident, including one unit each from Youghal and Ardmore and two from Midleton.
The fire service remained at the scene for several hours after the blaze was brought under control.
A Youghal resident said the whole town was in shock at the news.
It is believed the woman had lived in the area all her life and was well known and liked in the town.
She was described by locals as a lovely woman and a great neighbour.
The area is being preserved overnight for a technical examination tomorrow.
It is understood that Gardaí are not treating the incident as suspicious.
