Elderly man seriously injured in Macroom assault

AN elderly man is seriously ill this morning after being assaulted in Macroom early today.

The incident happened in a car park at Sleaveen East in the town.

The man received serious internal injuries in the attack and was taken to Cork University Hospital.

A man in his early 30s has been arrested and taken to Bandon garda station for questioning about the attack. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardai are carrying out a technical examination of the scene and will be looking at CCTV footage. House to house enquiries will also be carried out.
