Washout Sunday is nearly over and warm temperatures lie ahead

Met Éireann's Status Yellow rainfall warning for today ends at 6pm and the forecasters are predicting hot weather for the week ahead.

Up to 40 millimetres of rain was to fall today in Cork and Waterford, disrupting sporting events across the city and county.

Met Éireann's Matthew Martin said: "The initial warning affecting Waterford and Cork is in operation until 6pm.

"That will expire at 6pm as the frontal ban moves for the North and then the focus will be on the risk of some thundery downpours affecting Leinster through the overnight period through the night and into tomorrow."

Better weather is expected throughout this week with temperatures set to reach the mid-20s, albeit with some showers and thunder and lightning expected.
