Council gives go-ahead for a new 25-berth marina in Cork Harbour

PLANS for a 25 berth marina in Cobh have been given the green light by Cork County Council.

The proposal would see the installation of floating pontoons, floating breakwaters and access gangways at Whitepoint in Cobh.

The marina, which is to be developed in partnership with Cove Sailing Club, will be suitable for the full range of power and sail craft in Ireland.

Following a period of public consultation that ended last month, Cork County Council has given the green light to the project.

A number of submissions and objections were received during the period of public consultation. However, all were deemed unworthy of delaying or hindering the project.

After Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) requested that vessels shall not discharge sewage to adjoining waters, the chief executive explained that Cove Sailing Club will install and maintain signage to caution against it.

He added that users would be directed to the existing toilet facilities on site.

In 2010, Cove Sailing Club was granted planning for the development of a 74 berth marina and associated infrastructure.

Some of the infrastructure was procured and installed.

However, the planning application lapsed before it could be completed.

The new proposal would see the existing infrastructure used in a scaled-down version of the original planning application from 2010.
