Rebel Wheelers hope to get off to a flying start
Rebel Wheelers Wheelchair Rugby Club preparing for the opening round of the Irish League

Rebel Wheelers are taking on Ulster Barbarians, Dublin’s Gaelic Warriors and Laois Lions today as they look to make a solid start to this year’s league campaign.

It is their first season since merging with current Irish League champions, Munster Wheelchair Rugby Club.

Wheelchair basketball is a fast-moving sport that sees players making full contact throughout with four players on each team in specially designed wheelchairs made for taking full impact. Each game comprises of four six-minute quarters with the objective of getting the ball over the try line.

Players are assessed and then rated on a points system based on their mobility to ensure that it’s a fair playing field.

Speaking on the rebrand and joining Rebel Wheelers Multi-Sport Club, player Finbarr Dorgan said this can help to get more people involved in the high-octane sport.

“This will facilitate a player development pathway for youth players,” he said. “We will also be able to avail of the existing safeguarding and fundraising structures within Rebel Wheelers, thus making it easier for us to attract new players and grow the club.”

There are plans in place for a junior wheelchair rugby league to begin later this year to help towards the development of younger players.

Rebel Wheelers Wheelchair Rugby Club train once a week on Mondays at Scoil Bernadette, Montenotte from 7:30 PM and welcome people of all ages to come and try their hand at one of the most exciting disabled sports around.

To find out more information about how to get involved you can contact Rebel Wheelers by emailing rebelwheelers@gmail.com or Teresa Dineen directly by calling 0872625492.
