CORK County Council has taken delivery of two new 8,500-litre water tankers to complement the existing fire services fleet.

The new water tankers, which will be stationed in Bandon and Bantry, will improve services in responding to fires in areas which do not have an existing hydrant supply.

Tim Lucey, chief executive of Cork County Council, which runs the fire service, highlighted the importance of such equipment to the council’s fire service.

“These new water tankers will greatly improve our ability to deal with incidents where water resources are an issue as they will provide additional water carrying and pumping capacity.”

This was reiterated by Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan, who also acknowledged the vital role of the Council’s Fire Service.

“Cork County Council’s Fire Service is a vital part of the council. Our firefighters are highly respected and admired for their dedication and commitment to the people of Cork County.

“In 2018, they responded to 3,755 emergencies and equipment, such as these new water tankers, are vital in enabling our crews manage fire fighting.”

The purchase of these water tankers has been supported by the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management.
