CASTLELYONS is in mourning today for a local man killed in an accident in Kilkenny.
Chris Hegarty was killed when he was hit by a lorry on the N25 at Glenmore.
Mr Hegarty was rushed to Waterford University Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
A post mortem examination was due to take place.
The main N25 betrween Rhu Glenn outside Waterford city and New Ross was closed for several hours following the accident to allow a forensic examination of the accident site.
Today, tributes to Mr Hegarty and his family were being paid.
Fermoy Fine Gael councillor Noel McCarthy said the Hegarty family is very well known locally and the community is devastated by the death of Mr Hegarty.
He said: “He was one of the nicest men you could meet. I was devastated to hear the news last night. The Hegartys are a very popular family.” Gardaí at Thomastown are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward, particularly any motorists who were travelling in the area at the time and may have dash cam footage. The Health and Safety Authority have said the body has also been made aware of the accident.
