A toddler, who was taken to Cork University Hospital in the early hours of this morning with critical injuries, has died in hospital.
Gardaí at Anglesea Street are currently investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death of the two-year-old.
Gardaí were called to an apartment on Boreenamanna Road this morning at approximately 5.18am.
The young child was taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries, where she was later pronounced dead.
An incident room has been established at Anglesea Street Garda Station and a technical examination of the apartment will be carried out this morning by Crime Scene Examiners from Cork City.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post mortem is being arranged.
A Garda spokesperson said the results of a post mortem which will determine the course of the Garda investigation and no arrest have been made at this time.
