AN EAST Cork club in the running for the FAI’s national club of the year has said an act of vandalism at its club grounds was “mindless”.
Midleton FC’s clubhouse had a large double-glazed window broken last Friday night before damage was done to the inside of the building with historical club memorabilia damaged, the kitchen ransacked, a roller shutter damaged and a fire extinguisher’s contents sprayed in a multi-media room.
Midleton FC is one of only six clubs in the country who have been selected as a finalist in the FAI Club of the Year competition with the winner being announced during the FAI AGM dinner later this month.
Mick Kirby, club chairman and founder, said members are saddened by the incident.
“As a local football club everyone in the community contributes to provide a facility like this for the people of Midleton and this is just so sad for everyone. We hold fundraisers to help raise money for this building to happen and to see someone try to destroy it in a moment is hard to understand.
“I would like to thank the local residents and Midleton Gardai who were very quick to the scene last night. Things could have been even worse without their intervention,” Mr Kirby added.
Gardaí are investigating CCTV footage from the incident.
