AN attempted suicide by a man in garda custody in Cork is under investigation.

The incident occurred in a holding area of the courthouse on Anglesea Street last Friday afternoon.

The man required hospital treatment.

Gardai also contacted the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission.

A spokeswoman for GSOC said: "The matter was referred to GSOC by gardaí (under section 102 (1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005 last Friday, GSOC investigators went to the scene, and an investigation is ongoing."

Referral of a death to GSOC is normal procedure when there is a death or serious injury where there has been a garda present, to ensure an independent investigation.
