CALLS have been made to redesign a traffic junction on the northside of the city after a serious accident this morning.

An incident involving two cars occurred at the busy road junction at Assumption Road and the Blackpool Bypass during rush hour this morning causing delays for traffic in an out of the city.

It is believed one car involved in the incident overturned.

Gardaí, ambulance and fire crews rushed to the scene and one person was treated for injuries.

Local councillor Ken O’Flynn has said the junction needs to be completely redesigned amid calls for a new light signal system.

“This junction needs to be redesigned. I’m actually surprised at how few accidents happen there because there are lots of near misses,” said Mr O’Flynn.

“I have sent an email to the National Transport Authority and the roads department of Cork City Council because this needs to be addressed immediately,” Mr O’Flynn added.

Munster Fire Control control confirmed that two units from Ballyvolane and from Anglesea Street attended the scene shortly after being alerted to the incident at 8.30am.
