35-year-old Karen Harrington made an application to the High Court on Thursday seeking release. The application was opposed by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Harrington was charged last Wednesday with the murder of two-year-old Santina at 26 Elderwood Park, Boreenmanna Road on July 5 last.

According to the Irish Times, the court was told people charged with murder can wait up to a year for a trial date.

Justice Eileen Condon said that while Ms Harrington was charged with a serious crime, the court had to be mindful of a person's presumed innocence.

She imposed strict bail conditions requiring Harrington to reside at her friend's house, sign on at a garda station each morning and afternoon and stay indoors from 8pm to 8am.

She was also ordered to stay away from the location of the alleged offence and not to have contact with any witnesses or members of the family of the deceased child.

A €5,000 cash deposit was also required before Ms Harrington would be released.
