Suspected arson attack in Ballyvolane estate

GARDAÍ are investigating a suspected arson attack at a Ballyvolane estate last night at an occupied house.

Cork City Fire Brigade was alerted to an incident at the Glenfields housing estate, adjacent to Ellis’s Yard yesterday evening at approximately 6.20pm.

It is understood that lit paper was pushed through a letterbox in the estate leading to a blaze.

Witnesses said a number of youths were seen in the area at the time near the Glen Rovers Hurling club and locals informed the emergency services. The house was occupied at the time of the incident.

Munster Fire Control confirmed that three units attended the scene and were stood down just after 7pm.

A spokesperson said: “We were alerted to a house fire at 18:18 and three appliances attended from Anglesea Street and Ballyvolane. They were stood down at 19:02.” Gardaí were also called to the scene but no arrests were made at the time.

No injuries were recorded.
