Vandals have destroyed a table and chair set next to a children's playground in Ballincollig Regional Park.

It is believed the table and chairs were set on fire around 10pm on Saturday evening, and dismayed locals discovered the burnt-out remains on Sunday morning.

Stephen Scully of Cork City Council's Parks and Recreation Department said they were aware of the incident.

"It is unfortunate as it is so close to the children's playpark. Many families used to use it to get a bit of grub when taking a break from playing."

However, he said incidents like these are isolated. "It is an isolated act, the park covers a huge area."

The City Council will replace the damaged table and chairs. "We will replace it. They were very well used. It will cost about €2,000," he told The Echo.
