A Cork man has won €20,000 on Winning Streak just two days after graduating with a business degree.

Denis Murphy from Ballinhassig in county Cork graduated from Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) last Thursday and kept the celebrations going over the weekend as he went to Dublin to appear on Winning Streak.

He found out he had been selected for the show in unusual circumstances - he was enjoying Christmas dinner with his family two Saturdays ago, as his brother Daniel was home from Australia and the family wouldn’t get to see him until 2020.

The Murphy family were having a turkey and ham dinner and exchanging presents when a glut of calls and texts came through to Denis’ phone congratulating him on getting on Winning Streak.

If Christmas in October isn’t surreal enough, you could imagine how strange it felt for Denis who was reading all these messages, including one video message where Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy pull his name from the Winning Streak drum.

Supporting Denis in the RTÉ studios on the night was a group of his close friends, his parents, Imelda and Patrick Joseph and his sisters Anna and Maria. His brother Daniel watched on the RTÉ Player from Sydney.

Denis would like to use the winnings from the show to do a bit of travelling before he starts working, citing Australia as a possible destination.
