THERE were huge traffic tailbacks on the South Ring Road and around the Kinsale Road Roundabout this evening following reports of a number of collisions in the area.
A crash on the N40 South Ring Road by the Douglas exit caused severe congestion.
It was not immediately clear if anyone suffered injuries in the incident but gardaí were on the scene.
Up to four vehicles were involved in the crash, which caused long tailbacks during commuter rush hour.
Separately, a crash occurred at the Kinsale Road Roundabout, involving a number of cars.
The fire service and ambulance were on the scene and one lane of traffic was closed.
Earlier this week, Cork City Council was urged to collate figures on the number of accidents on the busy commuter stretch after several incidents in recent weeks.
Green Party representative Dan Boyle has said the local authority should log instances of accidents in order to provide real-time data so traffic issues can be addressed.
Mr Boyle said: “I find it disappointing that we don’t have any statistics for the amount of collisions that take place on the Southern Ring Road.
“There have been several collisions over the course of the last month that caused gridlock throughout the city and I think some real-time information might help the council plan forward.
“Given the number of such incidents that have happened, what is the overall city council policy on this? Are we depending too much on changes to the Dunkettle Interchange? It’s a problem of traffic volume and traffic direction.”
