The Taoiseach is expected to seek a dissolution of the Dáil today, paving the way for a General Election campaign to begin.

Leo Varadkar will now head to Aras an Uachtarain later today to meet with President Michael D Higgins.

This means the election campaign effectively starts today and Corkonians can expect election posters to be erected in the coming days.

It has been confirmed that the President's schedule today is light and can easily accommodate an audience with Mr Varadkar to formally dissolve the 32nd Dail and commence the three and a half week campaign.

Mr Varadkar cancelled this morning's meeting of Fine Gael ministers and brought Cabinet forward to 9am, fuelling fresh specuation the Dail could be dissolved today.

Normally, Mr Varadkar convenes a meeting of his party's ministers before Cabinet in order to discuss strategy and agree plans before discussions with independent ministers.

However, with the near certainty of the Dail being dissolved this week, the move to bring the Cabinet meeting forward from its normal 10.30am start was last night seen as significant.
