BLARNEY Hotel Golf and Spa Resort is to remain closed for another month at least.

Workers at the hotel and leisure resort were informed last night that the hotel will not reopen this morning and will remain closed for the month of February.

Workers were due to return to work this morning after uncertainty around the future of the hotel.

More than 40 workers are affected by the closure extension and expect to receive letters this morning outlining more detail regarding the closure.

Cork North Central Solidarity TD Mick Barry has criticised the extension of the hotel closure and said that the treatment of the workforce was “shoddy in the extreme".

“Workers who were due to report back to work today were given less than 24 hours notice that their workplace is to remain closed for a further month. Once again we see these workers being treated in a fashion which is shoddy in the extreme.

“What is happening in Blarney tells us that the sharp rise in precarious work and the trampling of workers’ rights need to be treated as issues for debate in this election campaign.”

Ten staff were initially issued with temporary redundancies earlier this month. Those employees all work in the leisure centre and spa.

Earlier this month, there were fears surrounding the future of the hotel, after it unexpectedly closed its pool, gym, and spa. The future of the hotel and leisure facilities remains uncertain.
