CALLS have been made for former Cork North Central TD Dara Murphy to pay back expenses for travel and accommodation for his work as a TD in recent years.
Sinn Féin's Cork South Central TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire claims the expenses were not used for the purposes for which they are intended.
Mr Ó Laoghaire said: “I note that Mr Murphy has not spoken in the Dáil in almost two years and appeared to be clocking in on his way to Brussels.
"This is dishonourable. It is also hugely disrespectful to the people who of Cork North-Central who elected him.”
He’s also condemned the Taoiseach’s praise of Dara Murphy’s work in Europe, given that the work was on behalf of the European People's Party group, not the state.
“I think it is only right and proper that he pay back the money he claimed while working elsewhere.
"Things like this leave a bad taste in the mouth of the public,” Deputy Ó Laoghaire said.
“Furthermore, I think we need to move away from an unvouched expenses system and towards one which sees travel and accommodation supported by receipts in order to prevent this happening in the future,” he added.
