Gardaí in Cork have launched an investigation after a vehicle was abandoned following a car chase in Cobh in the early hours of this morning.

The driver of the car failed to stop when asked to do so by Gardaí who were patrolling the area and the vehicle was subsequently pursued through housing estates in the town.

The vehicle in question was found abandoned by Gardaí a short time later after the occupants fled on foot.

In a statement issued by the Gardaí they said:

"Gardaí are investigating an incident of dangerous driving which occurred in the Cobh area, Co. Cork in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 18th February 2020. 

"A car failed to stop for Gardaí who were on patrol in the area.

"The vehicle was then pursued by Gardaí and found abandoned a short time later. 

"The occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot. The car was detained. Investigations ongoing."
