Gardaí find €60,000 worth of drugs in car near Cork town

Gardaí in Cork have arrested a man in his twenties after they found around €60,000 worth of drugs hidden in his car near Fermoy on Saturday night.

It is believed that gardaí stopped the car after the driver was recorded as breaking the speed limit near Fermoy on the N8 at around 8.30pm last night.

Gardaí searched the car and seized €40,000 of suspected cannabis herb and approximately €18,000 worth of suspected cocaine.

The male was arrested under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act 1996 in relation to this incident and detained in Fermoy Garda Station.

Gardaí said the investigation is ongoing and that the suspected drugs have been sent for analysis.

The driver can be detained for up to seven days under the Drug Trafficking Act 1996.

In a statement, gardaí said:

“Gardaí carried out a search of a car in the Fermoy area, Co. Cork last night and seized €40,000 of suspected cannabis herb (pending analysis) and approximately €18,000 worth of suspected cocaine (pending analysis). A male, aged in his 20s, was arrested under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act 1996 in relation to this incident and detained in Fermoy Garda Station. Investigation ongoing.”
