Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald will be invited to take part in the Prime Time Leaders Debate tomorrow evening.

There had been controversy over Ms McDonald being left out of the line-up, which includes Leo Varadkar and Micheál Martin, given Sinn Féin’s performance in the polls.

Following the latest Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post where Sinn Féin overtook Fine Gael in popularity, RTÉ have decided to invite Ms McDonald to Tuesday night’s debate.

In addition, RTÉ will invite the leaders of five other parties to a debate on Prime Time this Thursday night.

In a statement RTÉ said that it “is very mindful it has a duty to the public to reflect events as they unfold.” They say they have taken into consideration the “notable change in the dynamic of the campaign on the ground” over the course of the campaign and in recent days.

“We now consider it necessary to amend our original approach, respond to the changes in the campaign, and continue to put the audience first in the making of Tuesday night’s programme.”
