Latest: 235 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland today; Death toll now stands at nine

The Department of Health has confirmed the death of two more Covid-19 patients in Ireland.

Both of these patients were from the east of the country, one female with underlying health issues and a male.

This brings the total number of deaths to nine.

There were 235 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland today, bringing the total number of cases in the Republic to 1,564.

As of Monday, 11% of confirmed Covid-19 cases were from Cork.

Speaking at the Department of Health press conference this evening, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Dr Tony Holohan, stated that the number of close contacts reported by the average Irish Covid-19 case has dropped from 20 to five. 

Dr Holohan stated that social distancing needs to remain a priority.
